SERIES: Paprika (Satoshi Kon film)
CHRONOLOGY: just before reuniting with Atsuko at the end of the movie
CLASS: Hero-ish

BACKGROUND:
Once upon a time, somewhere in Tokyo, there was an elite psychiatric institute which we will call "the Institute." Using technology engineered by Dr. Kosaku Tokita and methods developed by Dr. Atsuko Chiba, the Institute shot to prominence with unprecedented new successes in mental treatment, including but not limited to helping severely schizophrenic patients not only manage their symptoms, but go into remission altogether. The technology behind this treatment was the DC Mini, a small headset that allowed the psychiatrist to observe or even enter the patient's dreams, to gain a better understanding of their subconscious minds.
Dr. Chiba, however, soon realized that these dream-analysis treatments could be applied to more conditions than just schizophrenia. Secretly, she began using the psychotherapy (PT) machines to treat patients outside the Institute for things like anxiety disorders, depression, and so on, with an equally remarkable success rate. Of course, these unauthorized treatments were illegal, so she operated in disguise and under a code-name: "Paprika".
This is not to say, however, that Paprika was merely a disguise. You see, Atsuko had for many years subjected herself to an austere regimen of mental self-discipline, to become a better and more professional doctor - or, on a deeper level, to become a true, grown woman. She diligently suppressed all the feelings and impulses that she deemed "unprofessional" or "childish," but those elements of her personality didn't simply go away. Instead, they gradually coalesced into a separate personality - a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky young girl who followed her heart more than her mind. In short, the polar opposite of the "new Atsuko" and her icy demeanor.
Atsuko preferred to think of Paprika as a character, a persona whose mindset she could enter and leave at will, and that was how it was in her secret private sessions. She would become Paprika, and Paprika's sweet, warm bedside manner would win patients over and accelerate their treatment, and in the morning she would return to being Atsuko and go back to work. But as it turned out, Paprika had a mind and a will and a voice of her own. Atsuko accepted this after some time, but told no one. She was head of her department, after all, and considering the cutthroat internal politics at the Institute, a psychiatrist of her status who was found to have multiple personalities would have been run out of the place, possibly even out of the profession. Furthermore, it would have endangered the development of the DC Mini, as well - all her work would have been discredited.
Fortunately, Paprika's goals and values weren't all that different from Atsuko's. She was fine with playing the role of the "dream detective," which suited her whimsical personality to a T, and letting her serious half handle the boring day-to-day stuff. Atsuko, thus, believed she could control Paprika; therefore, her split personality wasn't a problem. So this arrangement continued for a while.
Then one day, as they were nearing the end of development, nearly ready to unveil the DC Mini to the public, three of the devices were suddenly stolen. Since Dr. Tokita hadn't yet bothered to program them with security functions, this meant that whoever had the DC Minis could access the mind of anyone connected to a PT machine at will. The culprit - apparently Tokita's assistant Kei Himuro - wasted no time attacking Atsuko's direct supervisor Dr. Shima, and then Atsuko herself, nearly forcing her to throw herself from a high-rise. Atsuko was saved by the quick action of her colleague Dr. Morio Osanai, and Shima was saved by Paprika, though the dream came close to destroying his mind. But surprisingly, these attacks took place while Shima and Atsuko were awake and nowhere near a DC Mini. Were their brains simply hypersensitive to the device from their exposure to it? If that was the case, then the entire Institute and all its patients were at risk.
Meanwhile, Paprika continued her secret treatment of Dr. Shima's friend Konakawa, a high-ranking police superintendent. He suffered from an anxiety disorder, and had attacks when he was reminded of his college days or the number 17. Coincidentally, Konakawa became involved in the Institute's issues when two more therapists went on a delusional rampage.
Eventually, Atsuko and Tokita managed to find Himuro at an abandoned amusement park, throwing himself from the Ferris wheel, a DC Mini physically embedded in his head. Like, "had to be surgically removed" embedded. Tokita, in his naïve way, was content to call that case closed, but to Atsuko the situation seemed more dire than ever. There were still two DC Minis at large, after all. What if Himuro wasn't the culprit, but another victim? She loudly told Tokita off for not taking things seriously, which prompted him to enter Himuro's dream himself, regardless of the danger. By now, everyone's dreams were starting to merge despite a lack of any electronic connection. The attacks were continuing! When Atsuko realized this, she entered the dream as Paprika to save Tokita.
Himuro wasn't in the dream, though. Paprika followed his trail deeper into his subconscious, but found his personality had been essentially gutted. He was nothing but an empty shell, like the husk of a dead cicada. But there were clues - a statue of Osanai, idolized, and deeper still a tree bearing the face of Chairman Inui (either President or Vice-President of the Institute), his roots buried deep in the husk that had once been Himuro. Inui noticed her presence and attacked her, but Atsuko was able to awake in time to save them both... or so they thought.
Atsuko and Shima drove to the Chairman's house to confront him, only to find that "Shima" was Osanai in disguise, the Chairman had literal roots in place of legs, and uh... yeah, she'd never woken up at all. It was a trap. Paprika fled through the realm of dreams as best she could, but there was no escape. Osanai captured her, pinning her to a table like a butterfly. He revealed that he and Inui had discovered the true power of the DC Mini - the power to create their own world, where everything was under their absolute control. When Paprika started pushing the buttons on his insecurities, Osanai became enraged and quite literally tore Atsuko out of her, leaving Paprika there like a discarded costume. It was the dignified, icy Atsuko he was sexually obsessed with, after all. But Inui, who despised women and wanted Atsuko dead, interfered. This allowed Konakawa - oh, hey, how did Konakawa get in here? - enough time to get her away. He fought off Osanai in the dream, and ultimately shot him dead. Finally, Atsuko was able to wake up.
That should have been the end of the incident, but it was only the beginning. The bullet wound followed Osanai into the waking world, and with his death the barrier between reality and dreams collapsed. The crazy parade marched through the streets of Tokyo, infecting everyone it touched with its surreal madness, spreading further and further. An unknown number of people died for real, and Atsuko and Shima were nearly among them, about to be murdered by a ten-story porcelain doll... when, at the last second, they were saved by the most unlikely person imaginable: Paprika.
Yep, Paprika was still alive! The merging of reality and dreams allowed her to take on a physical form of her own. How was it she was here? "Desperate times call for desperate measures," was all she said. Cheery and unafraid, she led the two to relative safety, and impressed upon them the need to take on the mastermind behind this dream - Inui himself. But Atsuko refused, wanting to save Tokita first. Paprika, sensing an opportunity, told her to leave him behind, and when Atsuko angrily told her to obey, she coolly replied with something to the effect of "you never controlled me to begin with." Atsuko would have to choose: accept her feelings for Tokita, or suppress them like always and do the logical thing?
She chose to accept them, and left to help Tokita on her own. And Paprika watched her go with pride. Finally, Atsuko Chiba was being true to herself.
Accompanied by Shima, Paprika set off to go confront Chairman Inui at the source of the living nightmare, but when she got there, it was much worse than she thought. There was a literal black hole sitting in the middle of the city, for a start. And in the middle of that, Inui had taken the energy of the uncontrolled dreams into himself and become a giant creepy naked old man, which is definitely what you want to see in your nightmares. Witnessing this, Paprika had an idea, but knowing she couldn't stop him alone, she went back to reunite with Atsuko... but instead of that, she wound up in Cape Canaveral. Whoops!
PERSONALITY:
It's important to note that Paprika's essentially an incomplete person. The movie treats her largely as a separate character from Atsuko, although they began as the same person and are like two sides of the same coin. They share all the same knowledge and experiences, but have nearly opposite attitudes and approaches to life.
Like her namesake, Paprika is a little sweet and a little spicy. She is, as she puts it, the "missing spice" - the parts of Atsuko's personality that she's suppressed over many years. Where Atsuko acts like a hyper-professional ice queen, Paprika is friendly, sympathetic, and warm. She's outgoing, she's affectionate, and she loves to have fun. She follows her heart and trusts her instincts, and she has a strong creative streak, using dreams as her canvas. Where Atsuko represents the super-ego, Paprika represents the id.
In the same vein, she's sexy and she knows it. She flirts both for fun and for profit, and isn't afraid to use her sex appeal to manipulate people if she wants to. At the same time, though, she's a bit of a tease; long-term relationships aren't really her thing. Besides, Atsuko's already got someone she loves - wouldn't that be terribly awkward?
For a long time, Paprika's existence and true identity had to be kept from the world at large (her usage of the PT machines being super illegal and all), so she's developed a habit of secretiveness - although she'd rather call it an "air of mystery." She's not accustomed to talking about herself or her background, and she's skilled in the art of dodging questions and steering conversations where she wants them to go.
But she loves to meet other people and figure out what makes them tick. For better or worse, she does have all the training and experience of a licensed clinical psychiatrist, and her own insights besides. These combined with her excellent bedside manner make her an alarmingly effective therapist. That said, it's not all in the name of efficient treatment. Paprika does genuinely care about the people she helps... maybe even a little too much.
Now, let's not forget the spice. When push comes to shove, Paprika is a master of sass. Her psychological expertise means she can quickly identify other people's hot-buttons, and in a pinch she will readily push every last one of them. She is absolutely the kind of person who will mouth off at someone while they're trying to kill her. Anyway, sometimes the subconscious mind needs a little kick in the butt, right?
Because she's being drawn to a new world sans her dominant alter ego, some of Paprika's personality traits are bound to be a little exacerbated. Without Atsuko Chiba in her head (or herself in Atsuko's head? whichever), she'll have a much harder time drawing on a number of traits more characteristic of Atsuko, such as her discipline, organization, commitment, or inhibitions. She also has more direct experience with dreams than with reality, because let's be real, if you had a more diligent alter ego who wanted to take care of the taxes for you, you would not waste any time on that boring garbage.

POWERS:
Dream Manipulation (semi-canon).
Paprika has the ability to enter and manipulate the dreams of others, as if lucid dreaming, without using a DC Mini device. She can move from one dream to another without waking up in between. She can only use this ability while asleep, and her body remains in the real world. If someone wakes up while she's in their dream, she'll typically be booted awake as well - but the possibility also exists of her mind becoming trapped in their subconscious, particularly if they're determined to keep her there.
Within the dream, she can do practically anything - change her appearance, make minor or major alterations to the environment, create a whole new environment, interact with the dreamer, and so on. She can also take on an existing role within the dream, and in many cases prefers to, since if she looked out of place the dreamer might be surprised and wake up.
However, she can't directly control any part of the dream that another person is directly controlling (i.e. if they're lucid dreaming). Also, anti-psychic countermeasures can prevent her getting in. Physical distance does not factor into this power's effectiveness.
As a side effect of this power, she cannot have dreams of her own. Her own dreamscape contains only paths into other people's. So if she wants to dream at all, she has to join someone else's dream; otherwise, it's gonna be a boring night.
Not unlike the DC Mini in canon, this power has the potential to cause side effects in the dreamer - after long-term exposure, they may start to confuse dreams with reality, in the form of hallucinations and delusional beliefs. This would be purely opt-in; it's rare to have any side effects at all. I mostly include it as a potential plot hook later on.

Minor Reality Warping (semi-canon).
Basically, this just means Paprika's dream powers also work to a limited extent in the waking world, allowing her to bridge dreams and reality. This power has a very small radius, ie. it can only affect herself and people/objects within a few feet of her, generally speaking.
She cannot alter the shape or composition of someone's physical body, even her own; however, hair and clothes are fair game (with mun's permission). Minor changes can be permanent or wear off after time; major changes will always wear off.
Subsets/examples of this power include:

Subsets/examples of this power include:
- Her website, radioclub.jp. In canon Paprika has a website that acts as a portal into the user's dream world, either for herself or for them; it takes the form of a high-class lounge, and Paprika often uses it as a meeting spot. Technically, the user remains awake, but it's easy for them to forget they're using a website and feel like they're really, physically there... and the door can lead either back to the real world, or deeper into their subconscious mind. (They can still be woken by outside stimuli, however. Usually.)
- Media transport. Paprika can jump in and out of visual media at will, such as posters, advertisements, television, and computers. This includes things like riding a horse in a billboard, stealing a beer from a beer ad, and jumping through a TV and out the camera the broadcast is being filmed with. Moreover, she can travel from one to another, even if they're not connected in reality. If they're not, we'll say the "in" and "out" have to be within like 5 km of each other, but if they are (for example, a live TV report and its camera), the maximum distance is much greater. She can take a handful of other people with her.
(Note: This isn't the same as a technopath who can jump into computers - Paprika can only see what's currently displayed on the screen, and she can't interact with any data.) - Dream transport. If she hands someone a small item in a dream, it can remain with them when they wake up (or vice versa, if she takes something from them). This would only work on objects small enough to fit in one hand, without any real functionality; e.g. things like a business card, a feather, or a small figurine would work, but something like a phone or a grenade wouldn't. NOT THAT SHE WOULD GO AROUND DISTRIBUTING GRENADES ANYWAY, but still.
- She will never have to go clothes shopping if she doesn't want to.
